Session 4 - Looking Back is Good, But Our Adventure is Ahead

Jim Veneman, photojournalist, educator & BCA past president

A few years ago, a group of students were working on the last details of the fall issue of the university magazine. The stories and photographs, as well as the illustrations and overall design, had come together. There was just one big void: the cover. It was a tense, pressure-packed moment. Lauren, our managing editor, asked if she could have a little while to work on it. We all backed away and gave her space. She printed out a few images, tore them up (literally) and put them back together in a new way. Later that evening, the cover was complete. She had wrestled with a challenge and won. In that moment, we all had won. Does this remind you of anything? Can you feel how she felt in that moment? Did Lauren’s story remind you of times you’ve experienced? In the brief time we will have together, we’re going to revisit our past, take a quick look at today and try to envision the road ahead.
